Former President Mary McAleese and her husband, Senator Martin McAleese, both received the 2011 Tipperary International Peace Award.
It pays tribute to the work carried out by Mr and Mrs McAleese in both Northern Ireland and the Republic, as well as their efforts to forge stronger ties with Britain.
President McAleese also used her time in office to address issues concerning justice, social equality, social inclusion and antisectarianism while Martin initiated a series of meetings with senior Ulster loyalist paramilitary leaders to pursue peace negotiations which were widely viewed as instrumental in bringing loyalist paramilitary groups to peace talks.
